You expect little birds and you get big birds

Rook
Down one side of our yard, there is a low wall and it serves as a bird table, so its one of the places we can put food for the small birds. however very often we don't get small birds , we get big birds. Who would expect to get a Rook coming to seed, and in the middle of a town. Incidently on the other side of the wall is Thacka beck, because after leaving the Thacka beck reserve, a good portion of its coarse takes it under the streets of Penrith, except for a 30 yard stretch that passes our yard, before it finally merges with the river Eamont, which merges with the river Lowther, then into the Eden.

Jackdaw
and who would have thought a Jackdaw has a speckled breast.

Slightly smaller, but still not a small bird, The Collared Dove. There are two about at the moment, and they have been nest building in the trees by the beck.

And slightly smaller again, the Blackbird.
And as long as these bruisers are around then the little birds keep out of the way.

  3. All handsome birds that you've captured beautifully!
I do like the iridescence color you captured in the rook.
The jackdaw reminds me of our Grackles which for the first time this year were visiting my backyard this afternoon.

  4. All those birds are beautiful with the sun on their plumage - but I am sure little birds wouldn't have a chance with them around.

  6. HI Gordon I do like the sheen off the Crows and love the Collared Doves. I saw a couple of Ravens yesterday while I was out with my bird class. Your shots are all great.

  7. Nice shots of the corvids. It is surprising I guess to get them instead of the small ones. Perhaps it's because it's a wall and they can land and walk safely.

  9. Thank you for coming by Gordon. It is nice to meet you.
I love your Raven and the Jackdaws are good looking too. Is the second (spotty) one a juvenile by any chance/

  13. Nice photos! We don't have Rooks or Jackdaws here, but we do get the Collared Doves. They're pretty invasive - hence, we never see a Mourning Dove anymore.

  14. Beautiful birds, but I'm sure they keep the smaller birds away.

  17. Yes, you aren't going to get any little guys. Those big guys are quite handsome though, especially the jackdaw. But I bet you're going through a boatload of seed!

  18. It often takes a keen eye to distinguish these birds in the same black color. Nice post and I love all these shots. I haven't seen a jackdaw yet, maybe soon.

  19. Those blackbirds down your way are extraordinary with the yellow eye ring. Love the big birds you have on your wall too...the Collared Doves we have here in South Texas...unusual to see them, but I have seen them.

  20. I can only imagine the havoc they wreck when there are other birds around:) We saw one of our blackbirds here in the US...like a Jackdaw snatch a swallow from the sky and eat it. They are rather smart birds:)
